Computer manufacture, why is $100 laptop not counted as £50?

Question: Computer manufacture, why is $100 laptop not counted as £50?

People keep saying how the US is doing laptops cheap, the components are all made in the far east and assembled in the US, further why don't we use this idea in the UK and then 1 laptop per person will be reality. So why pay another country for what we can do better. I asked a similar question earlir but I put it in the wrong place.

The $100 laptop that you have heard about is not for RETAIL stores. That is a special program for developing nations; where the government education programs buy many thousands in each order for their school children. Here in the USA, I have seen some spot bargains, where a discontinuing model is being sold at about $400. These are models that did retail for around $700. These are low-end machines that seem unsellable when compared to the better $899 computers that sport the newer Intel D series or Dual Core processors. Don't be confused about prices here in the USA. It is hard to know exactly what stores like Wal-Mart are thinking when they chop the price of a computer to the BONE to get rid of their inventory. Good luck and Happy Computing!

Because it's in dollars*!!* But I agree why do we always have to pay more, when it comes to sale time some items drop to a fraction of there original price.
