What are the best laptops around? please do not say a mac!?

Question: What are the best laptops around? please do not say a mac!?

(Posted by: Zina on 2010-09-02 10:35:00)

I only say not a MAC because I am not used to them and do not like that. i like what I am used to. Okay so can you give me the best laptop please! Give me alll your experience with it! And give me the price! I heard great things about Toshiba, Sony, Asus, and Lenovo. But if you give me a brand please give me the model. I am a college student and I have about 1000 flat for a laptop...but if you have a better one and is more expensive I can wait until I save more. My limit is like 1500....I know MAC's are like 2000. Ok I am looking for something with a great battery life (like 5 hours at least) good memory, clear screen, does not overheat, a nice screen (like maybe 13 or 14 inches), has all the things I would have on a regular computer....um will not bust down on me and be ruined. Will not charge me 500 dollars to fix a problem. PLEASE HELP ME! thanks! ALSO one that does not get viruses easily! And also do you think I'd be better off just buying a desktop? What is the difference between a desktop and laptop besides mobility? I don't really plan on carrying it anywhere besides on the holidays THANKS! And don't say HP or Dell. i've heard the WORST things from people I know who have them. also what ould be the best DESKtop if you recommended that Linds..i know like 4 or 5 people who had HP and it broke down on them....But I think the generaL thign is they are students and buy the cheaper HP...I hear HP that are higher quality like 2000 last great, btu I am not spending that

I have also heard terrible things about HP and Dell, however I own 3 Dell computers and really don't have any complaints. I've also got an Asus Netbook. The first one (Dell 600m) I purchased for school around the spring of 2003. I spent about $3,000 for a 1.6GHz processor, 512MB of memory and a 40GB hard drive. This computer was just fine for writing papers, starting my music collection, and burning an occasional CD/ DVD. I did purchase more memory and now it's got 2GB. A few years later the 600m developed an odd spot on the screen and I figured it was time to start looking for another computer. Also, the technology changed so much that it was time for an upgrade. I did some research and decided to purchase a Dell Inspiron 1525 with a 2.0GHz processor and 3GB of memory and a 140GB hard drive. This one ran about $750 and it still works great! I am currently in the process of upgrading the memory to 4GB and have been thinking about upgrading the hard drive to 250 or 320GB. But these upgrades on this computer cost way less than purchasing a new one and there is nothing wrong with it. Lastly, I purchased a Dell 530 desktop for my office a few years ago with a 2.33GHz processor, 320GB hard drive and 4GB of memory for about $800. Haven't had a single problem with it. Now, it's time for the bad news... My sister purchased a Dell Inspiron 1521 just before I bought my 1525 and she has had nothing but trouble with it. The thing has crashed numerous times and needed multiple hard drive replacements. She still uses it, but swears she will never purchase another Dell. Her room mate has an HP laptop (not sure what model) and has had similar problems with it crashing. She told me never to purchase an HP laptop. And the ASUS Netbook was a waste of money. I've had more problems with this thing than you could imagine. I am not sure if I could ever bring myself to purchase another ASUS computer. (I own their 23 " MS238h LED monitor and love it!) Lately, I've been watching sales at Best Buy/ Walmart/ B &H Photo and noticed that you can get a lot more for your money. I've seen deals for laptops with at least a 2.0GHz processor, 4GB of memory and a 250GB hard drive for UNDER $600. These "budget " laptops are definitely on my list to seriously consider the next time I need to make another laptop purchase. BUT, do your homework. If you think you've found the deal of a lifetime, do a google search with the model of the laptop and see what other people are saying about it.

A desktop will always have better performance for the price- although unless you're into like, hardcore gaming a laptop would be plenty good enough- the make (brandname) of any computer has zero effect on susceptibility to viruses, etc. although- if you don't mind learning a new OS, and would like to save a hundred bucks you might want to try a linux distro, and you would basically be able to forget about viruses forever ^.^ and then if you don't like linux you could always go get windows- but you might as well take a look as its free ;) and now on to the actual machine :p honestly there isn't thattt much difference.. i've heard about an equal amount of nonsense about toshiba, sony, asus, lenovo, hp, dell- as i have good things- the only real suggestion i can give you from personal experience is not to get an acer :p hope that helps :)

Few things to sort out first 1. Any laptop can overheat no matter which one you get. If you don't take good care of it, a laptop will over heat. 2. No matter which company you buy from repairs cost the same, now if you buy the extended warranity on it which typically cost between $150-250 dollars depending on which service you pick. (This is minded that any problem you have is covered under the warranity). But if you take good care of your laptop, then you should never have to worry. I've never had to spend $500 dollars on repair. If I ever did I would just buy a new laptop That would be cheaper 3. The brand of a laptop does not prevent virus's. That would be the user. If you use internet smarts and keep the computer protectioned. Your fine. Download AVG free and malewarebytes. 4. Other then mobility. Desktop will typically last a few years longer then a laptop. Desktop are easier to upgrade hardware, then laptops. And desktop are better for gaming. 5. Yes dells are the worst of all brands out there along with Acer. 6. The tops brands are in no order, HP, Compaq, Toshibia, Asus and Sony. I don;t know who told you HP's were bad, but whoever they are they don't know what they are talking about. HP is one of the best all around brands there is. I have enver had an issue with the, and they have the number one tech support. This includes free tech support chat and e-mail. So if you want really good tech support you want hp. (Sony makes great computers, but they lack in the computer tech support) 7. Heads up, as you may not know, but laptop battery life will start to lesson after 2 years. Here are some computer. Since you only gave me a limited ideas on how you plan to use it. I only placed laptops with long battery life and the screen size you want. What about Acer, it's laptops usually have loads of features, over 2 GHz and dolby systems, dvd RAM / RW, good graphic cards(Extensa ) good battery life (travelmate) and good performance overall(aspire and the other 3)

I'm in a similar situation, and from myself, people who own/ owned and reviews from mixed places, have narrowed it down to a Sony VAIO and a Toshiba, the thing with Sony is some complain about the costumer service for repairing certain parts after warranty 's expired, though haven't seen that myself, and Toshiba isn't anywhere as nice and sleek as the Sony's. Go for the lap, trust me. Mobility is very crucial in college, it's better. Plus less expensive. Overall you'll find quite an array of models for that price range in either brand (under 1000, potentially 1500). Agree with the Mac by the way. Anyway, Sony is my choice, it includes a multitude in programs to play around with that is quite good, plus is a lot sexier than the Tosh.
