I got a free laptop at my college, should i sell my macbook pro?

Question: I got a free laptop at my college, should i sell my macbook pro?

(Posted by: kiwi34fruit on 2010-08-20 14:00:40)

So I today I found out I would get a free laptop from my college, a Macbook Pro! A brand new one with fully updated applications such as Adobe CS5 (I go to a ridiculously expensive art college). Unfortunately, I already have a Macbook Pro. I worked and saved up for two years to afford it, and it's probably the first thing that I was able to purchase by earning everything myself. It's literally the most important thing I own. Although I'm really really attached to it, I think I'm being selfish and I'm wondering if I should sell it for a thousand on eBay. I should also mention that the Macbook Pro I get from my college is rented. I must return it after four years, which is the only reason I'm not selling it immediately. However, I'm not sure if this fact will eventually change. The Class of 2009 actually got to keep their Macbook Pros after they graduated, but this was the first time this had ever happened in the last four years. There are several technical differences from my personal Macbook Pro and my college's rented one as well. Overall, my personal one is better. My Macbook Pro: 15.4 inch, 2.66 GHz, 320 GB, 3- year Applecare, 14- months Old College Macbook Pro: 13.3 inch, 2.4 GHz, 250 GB, 1- year Applecare, New Same software. Same spects such as the graphics card, battery, and whatnot. There's also the option of just using my second Macbook Pro as another monitor, because I am using it for art programs such as Photoshop, but I find this idea rather ridiculous. I'm not desperately poor, but I need money as much as the average college student. I don't need to show off with two bloody Macbook Pros on my desk. And the most obvious option, the option of asking for my money back for the rented laptop, is unavailable. An anonymous donor actually gives my school around 2000 brand new fully updated Macbook Pros each year to pass out to freshmen.

It seems to me that you should definitely keep your laptop. It's much better than the one you're being give. All you have to do is go into your Adobe Softwares on Your Rented Macbook and click "Deactivate " under the help tab. Do this for all of them, then, reinstall the software on your Macbook, and use the serial Used on the Rented Macbook. Or, go to your College Administrator, or whomever would be in charge of Handling the Macbooks, and ask if you could return yours, and get the software put on the Macbook you purchased.

Well it depends on how many years you have left. If you're a freshman maybe over the 4 years you'll get a job or some money, if you don't get to keep the mac. I'm sorry, but if you worked so hard maybe you should keep it. What if you just rented your mac to a trusted person, that way you could keep both computers and still find a way to make money. Sorry, that's the best I can do. Good luck!

I'd say that what you end up doing all depends on how much you need fifteen hundred dollars(which is what I'd sell it for if I were you), and how much you're attached to your laptop. Your current machine's specifications are quite a bit better than the one your college will be providing you. Faster processor, a bigger screen (undoubtedly a huge asset in an art-based curriculum), and more hard drive space for whatever media you'll be creating. If the laptops have the same software, which you say they do, then it really just comes down to your opinion. Do you want the money more? Or do you want your laptop more? Logically, I can't really answer your question because it just comes down to how you feel about the situation. But my advice: if you REALLY need the money - bite the bullet and sell your old machine on ebay. Otherwise, keep it - give it to a family member for safe-keeping or use it to dual-monitor with your other laptop. Also, may I ask what school you go to? Good Luck!
