Using laptop parts? help?

Question: Using laptop parts? help?

(Posted by: adis p on 2009-08-17 21:36:42)

So i have this stupid piece of shit gateway (which i wont buy ever again) laptop, and its got issues. a while back, the power supplie or something completely fried itself or something. idk, geek squad fixed it for like 130 and said it wouldnt happen again. like 5 months ago it did again so i just went ahead and bought a whole new laptop. im curious to know if there is anyway to use the old laptops motherboard or memory or whatever on another laptop or pc? i cant turn on the gateway since the power wont charge, so i wanna know how i can still use all the files and info on it. ive taken apart a pc before, but not a laptop. anyone have advise? thanks is there a way to take old parts that have all my files and put them on a different laptop, or even a pc? for example taking the gateways motherboard and installing it on a laptop or pc that works

Since you are unable to operate the computer regularly, I suggest removing the hard drive (usually four screws on the bottom of the laptop) and buying an IDE to USB connector. This will allow you to connect the old hard drive to your new computer, and retrieve whatever files you so desire to backup. I bought an IDE to USB connector a few months ago for an old PC of mine, and it worked wonderfully. Here is a link to one of the many adapters you can find on Amazon by typing "IDE to USB adapter ": amazon.com/ Sabrent-USB-DSC5-3-5-Inch-Converter-Adapter/ dp/ B000HJ99DI/ ref= sr_1_1?ie= UTF8 &qid= 1250570714 &sr= 8-1 The adapters are very easy to use. Good Luck!

Laptops aren't designed to be adaptable like desktops. Some laptops have expandability options, for example my laptop has a B wifi card which can be taken out and upgraded to a G or N one. You can also use the PCMCIA or USB ports to add features like network support or firewire connectivity. You might also be able to use external sound or video cards. As for taking one motherboard and putting it in a different laptop and using a CPU from a third, this is very very unlikely. The controller ROM wont accept unrecognised components. It barely lets you change the RAM or hard disk. Basically laptops have a small lifetime, once they're a bit slow it's time for the bin.
