Question: Why aren't there better standards for laptop parts?

Things like keyboards and touch pads are so similar it would be nice if they conformed to standards so we could swap them out ourselves. Why hasn't the laptop manufacturer industry done anything about that? I found some information about the Common Building Block standard from 2006, but adoption was really limited and it doesn't look like much has happened lately.

Laptops are still in the evolution process. Limiting manufacturers to a certain form would restrain the manufacturers from certain innovations. Take the Netbook for example. If the laptop had been standardized you would not have a Netbook. Also, the touchscreen capability would not exist. There are some standardized parts in laptops however. ExpressCards, Mini PCI express, Hard Drives, RAM and many other things are standardized already. You can buy these parts from any manufacturer and they will work.
