'sandbox' ! is it possible to create a secure area on my vista laptop to test run suspicious programs?

Question: 'sandbox' ! is it possible to create a secure area on my vista laptop to test run suspicious programs?

(Posted by: insure_and_go on 2010-02-08 20:13:34)

I've downloaded a free and legal program from the net but don't want to run it, in case it has a virus or any other nasties. I know I can check it with a virus checker but I prefer a more robust solution. Is there a way to create a secure, isolated separate area on my Vista laptop to run the program that I am suspicious of...so that if it DOES have problems it doesn't affect my laptop ? I don't think a 'virtual machine' is the solution as my brief research tells me that virtual machines are not meant for this purpose. (if I'm wrong, please suggest a free one!) I think the correct name for what I want is a "sandbox " but I'm not sure. Can't you recommend a program that will help me create a 'sandbox' for free? (Please i don't just want a virus checker...i know how to get that already) Thanks

A virtual machine is a completely sandboxed operating system. Sandboxing an app is putting barriers around it to prevent it accessing certain sections of the memory and drive. You can use sandboxie - which has a free version. However some apps sometimes do not install properly if you sandbox them, it depends on their function, so in this case a virtual machine is better. Of course to run a virtual you will be running windows twice and you require a fair amount of ram/ processor power however you can install a program completely and safely without any limitations. You also should know how to read the information a sandboxed / virtual app gives - which can be complex. All programs access memory/ registry/ network in different ways are you sure you understand them and can distinguish good practice and bad practice? For this google the app name and other people's opinions. SANDBOX sandboxie.com VIRTUAL MACHINE virtualbox.org/ A virtual machine is "safer " because you can delete the machine image afterward or go back to a previous image (ie before installation) and try another program etc. For a more complete virus scan you could upload it to: virustotal.com/ Which scans it with multiple a/ vs
