Windows can use NTFS or FAT-32 file system, but without a bit of assistance, Windows XP cannot even see the Mac OS Extended file system of your external drive. Windows 7 can see but not write any files to a Mac drive. OS X can use FAT-32 or Mac OS Extended file system. To use a drive with both, it must be FAT-32 file system. The main limitation of the FAST-32 file system is that it cannot use any file larger than 4GB. There are a couple of ways to enable full use of the NTFS drive format with OS X: * Install either "NTFS for Mac " or a combination of "MacFuse " and "NTFS-3G ", links below. * For OS 10.6, install a utility called "NTFSMounter ". This option is not automatic. You have to open NTFSMounter each time you start your computer or connect an NTFS drive and choose the drive (even if it is the only NTFS drive connected) in the NTFSMounter window. There is one way of enabling full use of a Mac OS Extended drive with Windows: install MacDrive, link below. |
