Question: Are mini laptops all that great?
(Posted by: Grinchy on 2010-08-24 14:05:09)
I'd LOVE a laptop that I could carry around, so the size would be perfect! However, my friends have been telling me that minis are awful to work with and run programs on, so I'd be better off just buying a normal laptop. I need a laptop that can deal with grad school work and that I can keep around for the next 4 years...would a mini be a good choice? |

No not really, they aren't as much fun to watch movies on or play games and the keyboards can be impossible to type on at times. there are plenty of full size laptops that are light enough to carry around. I, myself, have a 17 " screen gateway and take it with me everywhere and am totally satisfied. |

Probably not. Mini laptops (aka netbooks) are ultra portable computers with great battery life (which is awesome for carrying them around everywhere). However, they sacrifice performance for this portability. They're not good for a primary computer, and especially not for 4 years. Personally, I have a desktop, a 10 " netbook, and a 15 " laptop. The 15 " laptop I use for doing work on the go. The 10 " netbook I just use for traveling and stuff. And the desktop is for gaming and work. But that's just me. If you only want 1 computer, you're probably best with a 14-15 " laptop |

Dont go for mini, get notebook, you can run apps, can upgrade ram, play movie and do lot more compared to mini. I think mini was made for stuff like email, chart on my opinion. |

The mini is awesome but after a while I started wishing the screen would be just a bit bigger... it would be so nice to see a bit more text while you are typing a large document etc. As others wrote they are not the best if you want to use the mini as your primary system, but it kicks ass if you have a big computer at home and use the mini for travel. I got the HP mini 2140 and it's awesome, I would suggest you go for the HP if you do decide to get one. |

After a few hours, the small screen and reduced keyboard can be a pain to use. I recommend just going with a thin-and-light laptop with better processors and more memory. I recommend the Acer TimelineX 4820TG. It has a 14 " display, is only 3 cm thick and comes with Intel's new i processors that have Hyper-Threading and Turbo Boost technology for speedy multitasking. Read more about it here: notebookcheck.net/ Review-Acer-Aspire-4820TG-Timeline-X-Notebook.30281.0.html There are also other sizes available for this model, should you feel the need for a bigger or smaller screen size. The 1820P is like a tablet netbook at only 11 inches, the 3820TG is 13 inches (both have no built-in optical drive) and the 5820TG is 15 inches. |
