What real actual benefit will the one laptop per child (OLPC) really do for the poor nations?

Anyone think one laptop per child is ridiculous?
One laptop per child states that if you buy a laptop for ya kid they will send one to a kid in africa and other 3rd world nations. If you live in a country where clean water is unheard of and electricity is for the rich they why would a kid needs something like that? What about buy one box of pop tart...s and well send one to a child in africa? Cheaper and makes better freaking sense O.o I mean many schools in America don't even have funding to stay open yet we're spending millions to give laptops to kids in under developed countries? What happened to sending food to them? They no longer need it? Personally if I lived in a 3rd world I'd feel ticked off if someone said " Ok we could offer you food,clothing,proper housing, teachers,schools pencils,electricity and proper health care but instead here's a computer, Have a nice day." Picture if you had you house flooded away like with Katrina and the red cross said " Sorry no food,clothes, or housing for you but here's a laptop." ? Anyone else feel this way?
One laptop per child initiative?
how does the OLPC initiative help improve digital inclusion social inclusionapologies for the basic QI understand that through being 'connected' opportunities are better and increased learning is possible. but is that the only benefit to be gained? I know inclusion can occur but to what extent do you think this can happen? Internationally?Any more glaring benefits other than increased information accessibility?

The so called $100 laptop has undergone a face lift in order to be used by secondary school children. Uruguay, which has already distributed nearly 400,000 XO laptops to primary schools, has ordered 90,000 of the new laptops, known as the XO HS. if Laptops can be built for $100 for 3rd world countries, Why can't they be built for the western countries, Surely this would save education departments millions even billions of dollars a year, not only on hardware but on software as well, these systems run on FLOSS Free Open Source Software news.bbc.co.uk 2 hi technology 10309116.stmEven in western countries there are families that can't afford big buck for computers, let alone buy proprietary operating systems and software for themFirst and foremost knock the price of windows off netbooks and notebooks and what do you have?

I heard about a program called one laptop per child on 60 minutes the other day...its an organization that donates really cool laptops to poor countries if you buy 2...one for you and one for the child. They are only like $200 per laptop and I think its a great idea. What do you think? Do you have one? Should I get one?
