I have a 4-5 year old sony laptop, is there any programs that i can delete to give me more room?

Question: I have a 4-5 year old sony laptop, is there any programs that i can delete to give me more room?

When I go to add/ remove programs there is a long list of items that said is rarely use. But i don't want to delete them and lose something either. Does any one know which ones can be deleted with out messing something up? There are alot of programs that start with microsoft but i don't know which ones can go. Thanks For The Help.

Hi arron j; If you have music and pictures, copy them to a external drive or to a DVD, then delete them. Do the same for any documents you want to keep. Once you have saved your data, look in the add/ remove and un-install things that you do not use (Make sure you leave the obvious things like drivers and updates alone). I can't tell you which Microsoft one to remove as they may be programs like Office or updates. Once you have done that I would suggest that you do a defrag of your hard drive - programs >accessories >system tools >defrag.

The Microsoft stuff is not taking up much room unless it is Office and you don't want to remove that. Updates take up lots of room but you need those. I suggest you get an External drive. Removing anything from Add and remove programs is completely safe. You just lose the use of the program you removed.

You can delete all the ones you do not need any more. As none of us can read the list it is impossible to guess which you do not need. Negin by looking in your My Documents. Often you will find tons of pictures that you can move to a CD or DVD to free up space. Also look for any music that you can move or delete. Same with videos and other documents. Next look for any games you no longer play and uninstall them. Then look through the Add/ Remove for programs that you do not use or are duplicates (do you need three music programs?). Only you can decide what programs you do not need. You probably do NOT want to delete the Microsoft programs unless you know what they are and do not want them. If you were to edit with a list of programs, we might be able to help you identify what they are and then you can decide if you need them. But they are different for every computer based on what you have installed.
